From Sentani, on the shore of its lake, you climb due south toward the wall of the Jayawijaya — beyond it opens the Baliem valley and Wamena, perched above 1,600 m (5,435 ft), reachable only by air. A green gash stitched with Papuan gardens, no way out once you're committed.
